During October, 232 people came to the Garden Hous

During October, 232 people came to the Garden House seeking support. Together, they made 1,742 visits.In terms of the weekends, 108 people visited us, and this shows the importance of the Garden House being open on Saturdays and Sundays when there is less other support available for those living on the streets.#Homelessness #RoughSleeping #Charity #Peterborugh #GardenHouse

Here's Jenu who started volunteering with us in July.Jenu first heard about Light Project Peterborough last year whilst attending the Church of the Holy Spirit in Bretton. He heard Paddy (Services Manager) talk about our work and wanted to find out more. Jenu works at the city hospital but was keen to volunteer and help others in his free time so decided coming to the Garden House would be ideal. “This was a great opportunity to support the community whilst displaying my faith as a Christian.”
Jenu comes to serve food and drink to our guests every Wednesday morning. It’s helped him to realise how many people are struggling with homelessness and have problems within the city. “Some people come to the Garden House happy, and some are sad. I try to make conversation and listen to them either way. I’m also volunteering with other good people, and I enjoy getting to know them too.”Jenu concludes “we all need to keep thinking about the community and how we can support each other. There are a lot of people struggling either with finances, with housing or mentally. I keep encouraging my community to get involved with charity work too.”Thank you for your support, Jenu! 💛

At the start of the month, Paddy (Services Manager

At the start of the month, Paddy (Services Manager) went to London for the @housing_justice Night Shelter conference. He told us:"It was a fantastic day spent thinking about the future of night shelters. Started with a look back to the late 90s and comparisons between our situation now and the government's new policies then. As well as the similarity with a cross ministerial homeless unit being set up. Conversations were also had within that on the issues with rising private rental sector costs and frozen LHA rates."
There was a breakout room on trauma informed care and how to introduce it to night shelters was provided by @homeless_link, who also shared their trauma informed framework for homeless services.
Our friends from It Takes A City Cambridge were on the panel in the second breakout session on outreach and verification. They shared an insight into some fantastic practice on verification in Cambridge and thanked us for our support with their Housing Justice Quality Mark Accreditation.
There was also a group discussion on what we would like to see from any future night shelter funding. Colleagues from MHCLG (Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government) were there and interested to hear our views.
This was all important as it helps us to develop our thinking on night shelters, for us to hear about best practice and what we can do to improve our service for those most in need in the city. On top of that, it was a chance to speak about and share our Lived Experience consultation on night shelters and what our guests have said themselves.
