Kerry and Lizzy are second year nursing students a Kerry and Lizzy are second year nursing students at @arupeterborough. They do four placements a year in different settings (community, acute, primary and secondary care). Their placement with LPP came about when the @cptraininghub team were looking at other opportunities within community backgrounds.

Kerry said “We were asked to pilot the scheme as volunteers and personally for me, I volunteered because I want to go into a community setting when I qualify. I’ve come across some of the Garden House guests from time to time in A&E. So, I thought this placement fits quite well for me.”

Lizzy says “For me, it's a good learning curve because it's a different side of placement based on the nursing career that we are doing. But it's very impressive because you get to know how to deal with people, how to communicate with people, and how to direct them to the services that they really needed, especially those homeless. Most of them end up in a hospital and you don't know what to do with them. Now, we will direct them to the Garden House."

During the placement “We've had various morning and afternoon activities with different departments. We been on the Health Outreach Bus and shadowed nurses and doctors. Time has been spent with Alcoholics Anonymous and CGL Aspire and we've had short meetings with Housing Officers to understand the complexities that they have in housing people.”

Lizzy adds “I’ve been to the Asylum Wellbeing Cafes and I've also helped in the garden here as well as going out with the Street Chaplains to chat and listen to people. It’s been really good to try and see all aspects of LPP. One day, I went into a hostel to help with translating Arabic for those who struggle with understanding English.”

Kerry explains “For us going forward being in the hospital, when somebody comes in, we will have a different perspective and can understand why they are coming in. It also gives you more confidence of being able to start conversations in the hospital because you have more of an understanding of what they're going through.”

We wish both Kerry and Lizzy well with their studies! 😃💛
You may have seen that last week, @specsavers held You may have seen that last week, @specsavers held an evening session for our Garden House guests to take eye tests and receive glasses if required. During that session, one of our guests felt claustrophobic about going downstairs into the test room as there were no windows. So, we worked with Specsavers to arrange for their Home Visits team to come to the Garden House today so the guest could undergo an eye test in an environment that was accessible to them.

We are passionate about breaking down the barriers faced by those who we support.

Working in partnership with @specsavers on Bridge Working in partnership with @specsavers on Bridge street, we were able to provide eye tests to 9 of our guests who desperately needed this support. Having the right glasses means more than just seeing clearly for our guests, it means being able to read forms to access work and accommodation.

Kevin, who hasn’t had his eyes tested since he was a child said: “it means being able to finally be able to see stuff clearly and read stuff. Knowing that Garden House is helping people to get appointments is hugely beneficial. Knowing that we can go there and get this done for us is really helpful.”

Steve said “It’s well worth coming tonight, I went to a shop the other day, and tried the cheap glasses on in there, trying different ones and going “yeah that’ll do” even though they’re not quite right.”

One of our guests had been wearing two pairs of glasses at once to try to be able to see properly.

Being able to offer eye tests has made a huge difference for our guests and we are looking forward to working with specsavers to do this again soon. 👓😊

One of the participants at A Night in the Nave wil One of the participants at A Night in the Nave will be Elaine who is a long-time supporter of the charity and is both a volunteer and a LPP Ambassador. Along with her mother Linda, they have taken part in all previous Sleep Out events for LPP and she explains why she will be participating once again with her mother.

“I am taking part in the Light Project Peterborough’s Big Sleep Out for the fourth year because, as a volunteer, I see at firsthand how incredibly difficult and complex the lives of those experiencing homelessness are. LPP delivers crucial one to one support at the Garden House, giving guests not only access to basic essentials, but also to specialist agencies that help them find safe accommodation, begin their journey of recovery from drug and alcohol use, and receive the mental health support they desperately need.

By volunteering at the Garden House, I witness the daily resilience of those facing homelessness, but I also see the immense toll it takes on their physical and mental wellbeing. Taking part in the Sleep Out is a small way of standing alongside those who have no choice but to sleep outside, night after night. It’s an opportunity to acknowledge their courage, their struggle, and to reaffirm a simple truth: everyone deserves safety, warmth, and dignity.

While this event gives us a tiny glimpse into the physical discomfort of sleeping on cold floors, it is always a deeply emotional experience for me. There is a profound moment of realisation every year that while we 'sleep rough' in a safe environment with friends and support nearby, the people we support have no such safety net.
I take part not only to raise vital funds for the charity’s life-changing work, but also to send a clear message to our guests: you are seen, you are valued, and you have not been forgotten by your community.”

If you would like to show your support to Elaine and Linda then you can make a donation to their fundraising page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/nat-claire-elaine-linda-sleepout

Thank you both for your continued support to LPP! 💛🙏

At the Garden House, we often come across refugees At the Garden House, we often come across refugees who are homeless in the city and have severe mental health needs but didn't receive the required help whilst in Asylum Accommodation. It is much easier to start someone's journey of dealing with their trauma whilst they are in accommodation than on the streets.

Therefore, we're delighted to be working with St Mary's Church, St Andrew's Church, and the Quaker Meeting House to facilitate 'Health and Wellbeing Cafes' for Asylum Seekers. As many Asylum Seekers have suffered traumas and are new to the country, quite a few haven't integrated into the community yet. These cafe sessions provide the opportunity to join a supportive and welcoming community, in a safe environment. It also helps with their mental wellbeing to cope better with their trauma and past experiences, and begin to deal with these. We can signpost further health support if required during the sessions as well.

Those who attend the cafes can have tea, coffee, biscuits and other refreshments, chat and make new friends, take part in fun activities and games, as well as practise English. To support the volunteers at each location, Street Chaplains join in and provide a friendly chat when needed.

One of the cafe volunteers explained how a session went. "We had a very successful cafe this afternoon. 14 came up initially and a few more joined later. A few groups soon developed and there a real buzz quickly emerged. We put on some fun and games which generated smiles and laughter - it was great to see. There were lots of listening to harrowing tales too as well as lots left unsaid - perhaps too shocking to be shared. It seemed to have been a genuinely appreciated event and on our side, it was a real privilege to provide a warm reception, a listening ear, and be a friendly face. Can't wait till next time."

Some people have asked whether there are similar groups and cafes in the cities that they will be moving to in order to help them settle quicker in their new community. These interactions show the positive impact that the cafe sessions have had so far and will hopefully continue to do so in the future.

Thank you to all involved! 💛
