Raquel is one of our wonderful Street Chaplains. S Raquel is one of our wonderful Street Chaplains. She was struggling today but a nice gesture occurred which gave her a much needed boost.

Raquel explains "Somedays we [as Chaplains] walk around feeling like we have achieved nothing and I felt this today when I spoke to a gentleman in the city centre. I tried helping but afterwards I felt like I had failed him. I then went into an Indian cafe (Chaat and Chill) on my way home to get a Masala Chai. I made my order and was about to pay when I saw a card tapping the machine. I looked back and asked the couple if they meant to pay as it was my order and not theirs. The man said "yes" and so I thanked him and replied "God will bless you". He responded "thank you for what you do in the city for the community". They said they know what we do as Chaplains and thanked us - How beautiful! God is good!"

Sometimes a little act of kindness or appreciation can go a long way and make someone's day and change their mindset in a positive manner. 💛

Today, we had a stand at @arupeterborough's Welcom Today, we had a stand at @arupeterborough's Welcome Fair to interact with students and tell them about our work, offer volunteering opportunities and to encourage them to sign up to A Night in the Nave Sleep Out.

It's safe to say that our bean bag throwing challenge was a big hit and we saw a lot of competitive students taking part.

Kate is one of our Garden House volunteers. “In my Kate is one of our Garden House volunteers. “In my spare time I enjoy hiking, running, swimming reading, and going to the theatre. I have also recently taken up knitting which I enjoy but have found somewhat challenging! Spending time with my children, family and friends is also important to me. As is travelling!”

It was through work when Kate first learnt about the charity. “I heard about LPP at my Annual Staff Conference as leftover food was donated to the Garden House. Afterwards, I decided to find out more and looked on their website. I felt inspired and enquired about how I could help.”

Kate spoke with Julie (Volunteer Co-Ordinator) and a taster session was arranged which went well. “My first volunteering shift was in October 2024 where I met Steven (CEO) and I got ‘roped ‘into running the Great Eastern Run for the charity.”
Kate admits “My perception of homelessness has certainly changed and there are many stereotypes that do not help. Just one crisis could be enough such as job loss/relationship breakdown for someone to find themselves in that situation. For those who don’t have family or friends for support, then they have no other option.”

Kate concludes “In my first year, I have got to know the great staff, fellow volunteers and the Garden House guests (plus their dogs!). I can’t wait to meet more!”

Thank you Kate for your support! 💛😀

Stephen was a previous Garden House guest and we h Stephen was a previous Garden House guest and we helped him to find accommodation during his homelessness journey. Sadly, Stephen passed away on 5th December and his family decided to do a collection at his funeral with the proceeds being given towards our work. Tony (Stephen's father) explained the reason, "During one of his worse times, Stephen was helped at the Garden House. The donations made at his funeral will help others for whom it's not too late."

We are truly grateful for this donation and it really will help those who are in need of support and hope. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Stephen's family and friends. 🙏💛

Gill and Kai are two of our wonderful Street Chapl Gill and Kai are two of our wonderful Street Chaplains and they were out in the city centre yesterday. Here's an account from Gill on one of their interactions.

"Kai and I felt led to walk into an afro style hair salon and wig shop. The lady proprietor was sitting alone at her till with no customers. We engaged her initially with encouragement for her business and asked her how things were going with that side of her life. She gave the impression it was slow and could do with more customers after Christmas.

We felt to share some insight from Proverbs 31, about a woman who is hardworking, entrepreneurial and godly. She liked that and asked if that was referencing her … we said “yes, absolutely!”. She then asked "are you Jehovah’s witnesses?" We replied “No !- we're Street Chaplains from Light Project Peterborough.“

She wanted to know what exactly that was and what did we do, so we explained and asked her if she knew anyone who is homeless- which she did. Luckily, I had some LPP literature and cards with contact details on which we gave to her. She told us though she was a Muslim by birth, she would happily go to a church if she knew which one to go to. She felt all religions were the same God ultimately, it was just a matter of making that connection.

We then gave her a booklet from John called “ Making the connection” which clearly outlines the gospel. We also gave her some free chocolate, blessed her in her endeavours to work, run a business and look after her friends and family.

We love being Street Chaplains!"

On 22nd October, Megan and Nick (one of our guests On 22nd October, Megan and Nick (one of our guests) sowed grass seed in the Community Garden. Today, the grass has grown and looks lovely in the winter sun.

Nick said "At first I just wanted to help out at the Garden House, but as time went on it was nice to see the grass growing every day. On the day we sowed the seeds, I was struggling a bit with myself but this helped me to escape and focus on something both productive and positive. Since I've been coming to the Garden House, my interest in gardening as grown and I'm now looking forward to doing more things in the Community Garden." 🌱
