Gill’s Hiking Challenge – Shropshire
Gill is a member of the Peterborough branch of the Soroptimist Society who support a variety of projects and charities that focus on empowering and enabling the lives of women and girls. She is also a volunteer at the Garden House where she serves hot food, drinks and talk to the guests who need help.
In particular recognition of those women who are living on the streets and experiencing homelessness in Peterborough, Gill wanted to raise money for LPP but in particular Street Chaplaincy as their work follows the values and ethos of the Soroptimist Society. Gill’s target is to raise at least £1,000.
To reach her target, Gill will be taking on hikes located in several locations including the Lake District, the Shropshire hills and valleys, the North Yorkshire Moors and the five inhabited islands of the Isles of Scilly, and she aims to walk 130 miles. This will be achieved over four separate walking weeks, taking three days to complete in each area.
Day 1 – Long Mynd
“Luckily, the weather was pretty good, lots of sunshine and no wind. Enjoyed the walk very much. I realised how much I have missed walking in the Lakes. It was great to be back!”

Day 2 – Craven Arms circular
“As usual, the Lake District colours did not disappoint, as the sun shone down along the mountains passes and valleys. The temperature was ideal, about 10 degrees, maybe a little more – ideal walking weather. I am not one for walking in the heat, but I am one for celebrating in the pub afterwards, which I did with some fellow HF walkers. A well earned rest was had by all!”

Day 3 – Western side of Long Mynd
“I loved walking in Shropshire. My favourite part was seeing the ponies roaming freely along the Long Mynd, maintaining the heathland in their shy, elusive way, and I got some brilliant pictures. I am pleased to say that so far I have achieved 70 miles of walking (with another 60 to go) without blisters! A special thanks to Janet & Sharon, wonderful ladies I met on this walk who contributed to my fundraising, and to John & Paul, in Coniston, who likewise supported my aim – and thank you all!”
