Without volunteers, Light Project Peterborough would not be as it is. Enabling and equipping volunteers is an integral part of the work of the charity and wherever possible we want to join with others to make our city a better place.
The Garden House
Most of our volunteers though support our Garden House project by serving food and drinks, providing a friendly smile, and a listening ear. For each session that we’re open, two volunteers are needed. Read a blog post about volunteering at the Garden House.

People get involved with volunteering for various reasons. It’s a great way to build your skills and confidence as well as being able to give back to the community. You also gain a sense of being part of a team and making new friendships.

Street Chaplaincy
Some people volunteer as one of our Street Chaplains. They go around the city both day and to talk with, listen to, pray for, and bring hope to those needing it the most, including those who are homeless. Chaplains meet up twice a week and wear branded uniform to help them stand out.
The Street Chaplains are a small but amazing team of dedicated volunteers who want to share the love and hope of Jesus with others. The more people who are part of the Street Chaplain team the more people across our city we can support.” – Carol, Street Chaplain
Other ways to volunteer
We also love to see those we have helped in the past wanting to give something back. Some of our volunteers help form the Peer Advocacy team and they enable us to engage better with those currently struggling on the streets. This is because they know exactly how it feels to be homeless and can share their experiences with others.
Finally, we have a band of LPP Ambassadors who meet every two months to discuss ideas, give feedback and help with raising awareness of the charity. Each person brings their own expertise, knowledge, and network connections to support the Fundraising and Marketing Officer in their role. Each Ambassador receives a pin badge too! Will I need a DBS?
Most of our volunteers do not need a DBS.
Will I need to complete training?
All LPP volunteers complete online core training before they start and then annually. This will be for Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity and GDPR. There may also be some project specific training.
When can I start?
All our volunteers start with a taster or observation session. If after this you would like to volunteer you will be asked to complete an application form and provide the names and addresses for two people who will give you a reference.
How often will I volunteer?
At the Garden House we have lots of mix and match. Some volunteers will come every week or every other week, some volunteers will stand in when a regular volunteer is away.
Will I be on my own?
No, we always ensure that there are two volunteers behind the counter. New volunteers will be paired with an experienced volunteer.
What do I wear?
Garden House volunteers are asked to wear clean casual clothes and closed in shoes.
Celebrating our volunteers
Tuesday 2nd June 2026
We held our third Celebration Evening at the Willow Cafe in Central Park with around 70 volunteers, donors and fundraisers joining us. Francis Burkitt DL (High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire) and Ian Phillips (Head of Communities at Peterborough City Council) also attended and thanked everyone for their time and efforts in supporting LPP’s work.
Thursday 5th June 2025
We held our second Celebration Evening in a different location but still had an amazing time. We were also joined by the Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Paul Bristow.

On Tuesday 7th May 2024, we held our first Celebration Evening for our volunteers and supporters to show our appreciation and to say thank you.
It was a lovely to see so many people come together. Certificates were given out to volunteers who have supported us for a year or more.
