About the Great Eastern Run

The Great Eastern Run has established itself as one of the UK’s flattest Half Marathon races, making it an ideal choice for runners of all abilities. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner looking to set a new personal best or someone taking on their first major running challenge, this event offers the perfect platform to achieve your goals.

The event is organised by Good Running Events and has become a major event in the UK running calendar. The event starts and finishes at the Embankment, creating a festive atmosphere right in the heart of Peterborough.

 Race Options for Every Runner

The Great Eastern Run caters to participants of varying fitness levels and running experience through two distinct race options:

Half Marathon 13.1 miles (21.1km)

The flagship event is perfect for those seeking a substantial challenge. This is ideal for experienced runners looking for a personal best or those ready to take on their first half marathon distance.

5K Fun Run (3.1 miles)

For families, beginners, or those preferring a shorter distance, the 5K Fun Run provides an excellent introduction to organised running events. This distance is perfect for all ages and abilities, making it accessible for walkers and joggers too.

The Route: A Journey Through Peterborough’s Heart

What makes the Great Eastern Run truly special is its unique route that showcases the best of Peterborough. The event boasts a super flat and fast route around the streets of Peterborough City Centre, making it perfect for runners looking for their first half marathon, or those who are after a new PB.

The course has been carefully designed to provide an exceptional experience for both runners and spectators. This year’s Great Eastern Run route has been improved following feedback from runners and key organising partners. This route gives spectators better views as well as runners a chance to improve on their previous personal best times and ensures that 100% of the route is based on roads / tarmac.

One of the most exciting aspects of the route is that it takes runners through a section of the city centre, one of the unique aspects of the course. You’ll experience the energy of running through busy streets with crowds cheering you on, creating an electric atmosphere that will carry you forward when your legs start to feel tired.

Perhaps most remarkably, the route includes passing through the grounds of Peterborough Cathedral, featuring in the race route for the first time ever in 2023. Key sections include a dynamic stretch through the lively city centre and a debut passage through the scenic grounds of Peterborough Cathedral, promising an invigorating experience for dedicated competitors. This historic addition provides a moment of serenity and architectural wonder amid the excitement of the race.

What to Expect on Race Day

The Great Eastern Run is renowned for its excellent organisation and runner-friendly atmosphere. The event provides excellent facilities for participants to prepare for their challenge.

Participants receive a bespoke medal, chip timing, and access to water stations and medical support throughout the event. The chip timing system ensures you receive an accurate official time, regardless of when you cross the starting line in the crowd of runners. Water stations are strategically placed throughout the course to keep you hydrated, while medical support provides peace of mind should any issues arise.

The atmosphere on race day is truly something special. Join thousands of runners of all ages and abilities in Peterborough City Centre for what promises to be an unforgettable experience. The camaraderie among participants is infectious – you’ll find yourself encouraged by fellow runners, motivated by the cheering crowds, and inspired by the shared challenge you’re all undertaking together.

The flat nature of the course means you can focus on enjoying the experience rather than battling steep hills. This makes it an ideal choice for those attempting their first half marathon or 5K, as you won’t face the additional challenge of significant elevation changes that can make other races more daunting for beginners.

LPP will also have a stand in the race village so runners can meet together before and after the race for photos and contribute to the fantastic atmosphere.

Why Run for The Light Project Peterborough?

While the race itself offers numerous personal benefits – improved fitness, sense of achievement, and the joy of crossing that finish line – running for LPP adds a deeper layer of meaning to your participation. Every step you take will be supporting individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness in our local community.

Homelessness affects people from all walks of life, and the reasons are as varied as the individuals themselves. Some have lost jobs, others have experienced relationship breakdowns, health issues, or have spent their childhood in care systems. What unites them all is their need for compassion, support, and practical help to get back on their feet.

At LPP, we provide emergency accommodation, hot meals, clothing, and essential support services. But beyond meeting immediate physical needs, we work with each person to address the underlying issues that led to their homelessness. This might involve helping someone access mental health services, supporting them in finding employment, or assisting with benefit applications. We believe in treating every person with dignity and respect, recognising that with the right support, anyone can overcome homelessness.

 Fundraising: Optional but Impactful

While we’re thrilled to offer you this incredible race entry deal, fundraising for LPP is entirely optional. We believe that your participation alone – spreading awareness about homelessness issues and showing solidarity with our cause – is valuable in itself.

However, if you do feel inspired to raise funds for our work, we’ve made it as simple as possible. You can easily set up a JustGiving fundraising page, which allows friends and family to donate directly and safely online. JustGiving’s platform makes it easy to share your training progress, explain why you’re running for LPP, and update your supporters on your fundraising journey.

Alternatively, you might prefer the traditional approach of asking friends, family, and colleagues to sponsor you directly. This personal approach often works well, as people appreciate the direct conversation and the opportunity to hear first-hand why this cause matters to you.

Every pound raised makes a real difference.

  • £5 could provide a hot drink to someone every day for a month.
  • £10 could feed someone for a week.
  • £20 could help us put together the essential items a person needs when moving into
    accommodation.
  • £50 could provide emergency accommodation for a person in desperate need.

 Training for Success

Whether you’re tackling the 5K or the half marathon, proper preparation will ensure you enjoy race day to the fullest. The beauty of the Great Eastern Run’s flat course is that it’s forgiving for beginners while still offering the opportunity for experienced runners to achieve personal bests.

For 5K participants, even if you’re starting from a relatively sedentary lifestyle, eight to ten weeks of gradual training can prepare you adequately. Begin with alternating walking and jogging for 20-30 minutes three times per week. Gradually increase the jogging intervals while decreasing walking breaks. Many people find the “Couch to 5K” app programs helpful for structuring their training progression. There is also the Ferry Meadow’s Park Run every Saturday morning which can be a great way of helping you to prepare for the Great Eastern Run.

For half marathon participants, allow yourself at least 12-16 weeks of preparation if you’re new to distance running. If you can already run 5K comfortably, you have an excellent foundation to build upon. Your training should include a mix of easy runs, one longer run each week that gradually increases in distance, and potentially one session of tempo running or intervals to build speed and endurance.

Remember, the goal isn’t just to complete the distance – it’s to enjoy the experience. Listen to your body, rest when needed, and don’t be afraid to incorporate walking breaks during both training and the actual race if necessary.

 Building Community Through Running

One of the most rewarding aspects of participating in the Great Eastern Run for LPP is the sense of community it creates. You’ll be joining other like-minded individuals who believe in making a positive difference while pursuing personal fitness goals.

Consider connecting with other LPP runners through our social media channels. You might find training partners, share preparation tips, or simply enjoy the encouragement that comes from being part of a team working toward a common goal. On race day, look out for fellow LPP participants – you’ll recognise each other by your branded t-shirts – and don’t hesitate to offer encouragement or share in the excitement together.

The running community is remarkably supportive and inclusive. Regardless of your pace or experience level, you’ll find yourself welcomed and encouraged by fellow participants. This spirit extends beyond race day, often leading to lasting friendships and ongoing motivation to maintain active lifestyles.

 Making Your Mark

Participating in the Great Eastern Run for LPP represents more than just a personal fitness achievement – it’s a statement about the kind of community you want to live in. It says that you believe everyone deserves compassion, support, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity.

Your participation helps raise awareness about homelessness issues that might otherwise remain invisible to many people. When friends ask about your training or see your LPP-branded gear, it opens conversations about the realities facing homeless individuals in our community. These conversations can challenge stereotypes, increase understanding, and potentially inspire others to get involved in supporting vulnerable members of our society.
