Mick was sleeping rough for about three months aft Mick was sleeping rough for about three months after having issues with alcohol and falling out with his wife. He had also lost his job in advertising due to the problems he was having. “When I was sleeping on the streets, I had no self-dignity or self-pride.” Mick was sleeping outside a supermarket most nights and he was struggling that badly that he admits “I did try to take my own life at one point. But another homeless person told someone, and they came to take blades and medicines away from me. I’ve also been mugged whilst on the streets. To “cope” I was drinking alcohol from the moment I woke up to the moment I passed out.” Mick got to breaking point and decided he wanted help to get his life back on track. By going to @cglpeterborough, it led to him getting onto a detox programme for two weeks. Thankfully, Mick has now got back into a better place, rebuilt the relationship with his wife, and has been off alcohol for nearly two years. “I knew I couldn’t drink again after I had finished the detox. I had hit rock bottom, and I couldn’t go back there again. I no longer have issues with alcohol, and my life is better.” To try and occupy himself, Mick was looking for something to keep him busy. “Someone I know from WorkWell mentioned the Garden House and encouraged me to talk to Graham about an exciting opportunity. I took it with both hands. The PA training was really good. I couldn’t have asked for a better facilitator in Graham. The sessions were fun and though-provoking. I learnt a lot! A voluntary role suits me for the time being, but my long-term aim is to get back into full time employment. A big thank you to The Thrive Hive who brought don A big thank you to The Thrive Hive who brought donations to the Garden House earlier today. The Thrive Hive is a social enterprise, supporting adults with learning disabilities to engage in meaningful volunteering roles and community projects that give back to those who need it most. 💛 Throughout October, one of their clients spent her time hand-painting 15 backpacks and 6 t-shirts as part of her goal to help those experiencing homelessness. In November, they will be busy making some Christmas tree decorations for us too! 🎄

We just want to say a quick thank you to two of ou We just want to say a quick thank you to two of our amazing LPP Ambassadors - Julie and Grahame! 🤩 Grahame was a previous volunteer at the Garden House but now does presentations, mainly focused around Shakespeare, with any donations from these talks being passed onto LPP. Whilst Julie has started to go into schools to give assemblies about Light Project Peterborough's work. This will help to educate the future generations of our city about homelessness and the support available to those in need. Both have contributed greatly as Ambassadors by sharing ideas and using their networks to spread awareness of our charity. In September, 52 people came to the Garden House s In September, 52 people came to the Garden House seeking support for the first time. This takes the total of new homeless presentations to 239 since April. Billy and Rebecca have been together for over thre Billy and Rebecca have been together for over three years. They were living in a flat but were evicted after complaints by neighbours and they became homeless in December 2024. “We had a bad relationship with alcohol and there’d often be arguments and shouting. The police would often be called out.” For 10 months, Billy and Rebecca had been living on the streets. Rebecca recalls “It was absolutely horrible. You turn to drugs and alcohol as a way to just pass the day. At night, you can hear loads of noises and you start to worry whether someone is coming to attack you. It’s easy to get anxious and paranoid. You can fear for your life.” The couple had been to the Garden House once before and a few days before being evicted, Billy’s cousin reminded them about going back. “It really helped that we knew there was a place to go for food, drink and support.” Billy explains. Billy adds “We’ve had support with our Mental Health, been seen by the doctors and nurses, been given physiotherapy, had help from Aspire to get off the drink, and the council have helped us to find somewhere to live. We couldn’t have asked for much more.” In October, Billy and Rebecca were moved into accommodation. “We’d like to volunteer at the Garden House if possible.” Billy took part in the 5km Fun Run at the Great Eastern Run this year and completed it under an incredible 27 minutes! He is now hoping to enter the London Marathon in the future to raise money and awareness for LPP. Billy says “In a year’s time, I’d like to be a lot healthier and get off all the drinking. I want to show people that it can be done. From being an alcoholic and homeless, to having accommodation and being sober. I want to prove people wrong, especially those who said it couldn’t happen.” Whilst Rebecca says, “I want to build back the relationship with my family again. I didn’t have a strong relationship with them and my dad disliked my drinking because I’d get too drunk and would start blaming my parents for everything wrong in my life and the bad things that I had done. It wasn’t fair on them. Now, my parents and sister have started to speak with me again and it’s felt good to have their support.
Yesterday, two more people with lived experience o Yesterday, two more people with lived experience of homelessness received their certificates for the Homeless Health Peer Advocacy training. Phil and Michael completed their two week course with Graham (Peer Advocacy Co-Ordinator) back in September. They will now be joining Alan as a Peer Advocate and start to support our guests at the Garden House by completing forms, attending appointments and providing a listening ear to those who need extra support. Graham said "I'm very proud of both Phil and Michael and I'm looking forward to working with them and seeing them flourish in their role as Peer Advocates." Michael explained "The PA training was really good. I couldn’t have asked for a better facilitator in Graham. The sessions were fun and though-provoking." Whilst Phil said "I heard about the programme when I was receiving support at the Garden House and I decided I wanted to get involved but I wanted to wait until I was in a better place with myself." Nick was nervous to engage with @fitness_rush_mobi Nick was nervous to engage with @fitness_rush_mobile at the Garden House. However, Liam kept inviting him and eventually Nick gave it a go. “It’s been nice that they’ve been here every week and Liam has been friendly and motivational. I’ve started to really enjoy taking part in the exercises. Each week I have more questions to ask Liam about how I can improve.” Liam says “Nick has been brilliant and it’s so wonderful to see how far he’s come in the last few weeks. Through the activities he’s not only becoming stronger physically but appears to open up more and is showing willingness to keep improving. Nick is a fantastic example of why it’s a joy for me to come to the Garden House each week.” This is why partnership working is so important especially when it comes to people's journey of homelessness. We are able to not only provide food, drink and clothing, but also give people the opportunity to develop, try new things and get to a better place. Today, Julie (our Volunteer Co-ordinator) collecte Today, Julie (our Volunteer Co-ordinator) collected almost 100 handmade hearts from the Knit and Natter group which meets at @peterboroughmuseum. This brings the total of hearts received to just over 400 - we need another 600 to reach our target of 1,000 hearts to be given out on the streets of Peterborough by the Light Project Peterborough Street Chaplain’s just before Christmas. ❤️ #ChristmasHearts #Peterborough #Charity #Donation #Homelessness

Jamie has lived in Peterborough all his life and p Jamie has lived in Peterborough all his life and previously worked at Anglia Water. He has been homeless on and off for a number of years by sofa surfing at friend’s houses but ultimately spending most of his time on the streets. Jamie first came to the Garden House six years ago. He explains “My dad brought me here one day as he was concerned about me. I was mentally unstable at the time and there weren’t many other options. It did help me, though I was dismissive about the idea to begin with. I’ve got to meet and know lot of people by coming here. It’s very multi-cultural and you can learn a lot from others if you want to. Being homeless is okay if you’re well fed and can look after yourself, but when you start to deteriorate and starve, it can be very dangerous especially during the winter. Coming to the Garden House means I can get hot food and drink as well as respite from the bad weather.” Throughout his time at the Garden House, Jamie has had appointments with a GP, a dentist and support with substance misuse. “I’ve had six rotten teeth removed with a couple more still to go. The services I can access have been really good.” “I have had a lot of bad times but since having a health issue when I was 30, it’s changed my outlook on life and given me the motivation to do things differently. I’m still not fully better but I’m trying to eat healthier, get active, and cut down on my drug use.” Jamie adds “I’ve got a puppy now called Briggi and she has helped a lot. Having her means I don’t go out with friends as much anymore and I have more of a routine which is ultimately healthier for me. Having a dog does mean I worry more about the weather and protecting her from getting too cold or wet, but it’s given me a focus which I needed. “Teresa [Project Worker] is a lovely lady. We have had our ups and downs, but she has helped me so much. To begin with I struggled to allow people to help me, but I really do appreciate all the support I’ve been given. I like my life now, it’s simple and chill.” In the past few weeks, Jamie has been volunteering his time. “To give something back, I’ve started helping out with the showers at the Garden House,"
