A big thank you to staff from @caterpillarinc who A big thank you to staff from @caterpillarinc who came to the Garden House again to work on our Community Garden today. Nearly 50 people helped out with tasks carried out including weeding, sandpapering benches, tidying up the planters, and working on the compost area. 🙌💛
About a month ago, parents Kira and Robert were ta About a month ago, parents Kira and Robert were talking to their six-year-old daughter Mia about homelessness and how people can become homeless. Mia was very firm about wanting to be able to help those in that situation. So, she decided to do a Scootathon to raise money for LPP after her parents came across our work online. Altogether, Mia raised an incredible £153.53! 👏 Mia said "The Scootathon was fun and I was really, really tired at the end of it. I wanted to help the homeless, so I kept going to the very end! I liked following clues to my next location. I did two miles, but it felt like 100! I am happy we did the Scootathon because the money will help homeless people get food and clothes from the people who help them (at Light Project Peterborough)." Last week, we invited Mia and her family to the Garden House to show them around, give more insight into homelessness, and explained the ways in how we actually help people. We also provided Mia with a certificate as a small token of our appreciation. It’s really heartwarming to see children and young people wanting to help others as well as learn more about homelessness. Thank you Mia for supporting LPP and helping those who are in need! 💛🙌
We are looking for keen crafters to help us in our We are looking for keen crafters to help us in our Hearts for Peterborough campaign again! ❤️ Last year, we reached over 1,000 hearts made and given out. Hearts brought much comfort and a smile to many of its recipients whilst benefitting those who made them as well. People felt like they were part of something special and a sense of community purpose. You may remember a few months ago, that we shared You may remember a few months ago, that we shared George's story. George is from Slovakia but had been living in Peterborough for 16 years. He became homeless after losing his job from alcohol misuse. George was previously a Team Leader who looked after 120 dementia suffering residents. Whilst homeless, he came to the Garden House for support and as he started to get back on his feet, he decided that rehab was the best place for him to go to try and prevent him from returning to homelessness again. George also wanted to do this for his son's benefit. In a postcard sent to the Garden House, George wrote "Hello everyone, it's me George of the Jungle, the Bold One. I am writing [to] you from my rehab. I am 101 days sober. I miss you all. Say hello to everyone who you think may know me. Especially, Teresa, Georgie, Sam and Michal. Love you!" We're delighted to hear that George is doing well and staying sober. Hopefully, he will pop in one day in the future to see us.

She said “I’ve really enjoyed being here and I’ve looked forward to my Tuesday morning shifts at the Garden House. I’ll come back at Christmas though to volunteer again.” Megan, Senior Project Worker, said “Georgia has been brilliant, especially with the guests. She’s been a natural fit and has adapted so well. This is exactly what we need from volunteers. Guests, staff and fellow volunteers will all miss her but we can’t wait for Georgia to return again. Thank you so much!” ☺️ Although we’re losing Georgia, we will be welcoming back Charlie from next week now the school summer holidays are over. 🙌

They will provide practical, person-centred support to people experiencing homelessness, vulnerability or disadvantage at the Garden House and in community settings, including visits to people in their accommodation. Working as part of a flexible frontline team, the postholder will help people address immediate needs, access appropriate services and move towards greater stability, resilience and independence. The right candidate will also provide high-quality frontline support while giving day to day operational leadership, guidance and co-ordination to Project Workers and volunteers. The progress of our Community Garden space has bee The progress of our Community Garden space has been helped by the support of volunteers Robbie, Barbara and Sophie who have been coming in on Wednesday mornings to work on the garden and provide workshops for guests. Robbie says “We’ve been involved with many Community Gardens in the past and we saw a post online about six months ago regarding this new gardening space. We had previously thought about coming here anyway because we heard the [front] garden needed to be regularly maintained.” Barbara adds “We also know Linda (Garden House volunteer) from another community project we’ve previously been involved in together with, as well as ‘Ginnie’ [Virginnia] (Garden House volunteer) who we’ve known for years.” Most weeks, they’ve been joined by Sophie during the gardening sessions. “I first met Robbie and Barbara through a couple of community groups and a mutual friend. They introduced me to Light Project Peterborough and told me how there was a Community Garden being developed. After I first came here, I’ve been interested in the project ever since. I’ve even come here on my own to work on the garden. It’s been a really nice experience.” Robbie explains “We’ve had no problems with the guests; they’ve been friendly, polite and shown eagerness to get involved. Some guests have even opened up to us during the sessions. We’ve been interested to hear their stories without pressurising them. Sophie added “Slowly but surely, we’ve got to know some guests quite well. One of them spent a lot of time with us chatting the other week which led to us not getting much gardening done but it was lovely to have deep conversations and for him to open up to us so we didn’t mind whatsoever.” Robbie says “Obviously, the Community Garden is a part of Light Project Peterborough but at the same time, it is a separate space at the Garden House to take people away from their issues or situations. It brings a welcome distraction and in fact, some of the guests were already great gardeners.” He concludes “It is a true Community Garden. There are no hidden agendas, no financial interest, and several different groups of people are coming together for one common aim.”
Georgia is a university student who wanted to keep Georgia is a university student who wanted to keep herself busy during the summer months before heading back in September. “I didn’t actually know anything about Light Project Peterborough beforehand until I Googled it. I had only heard the name from my nan’s church, St Oswalds. After I had a look on the website, I was interested in volunteering, so I got in touch.” Georgia is passionate about helping others, “I wouldn’t say I had a preconception of homelessness. I’ve known some people personally who have been homeless. I’m a person who takes others as they are whether they’re homeless or not. I just liking helping people.” Georgia adds “So far, I’ve really been enjoying it here and everyone has been lovely. It’s been nice helping guests and having conversations with them but I’m still learning all of their names. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know the other volunteers. Virginnia has a very interesting backstory, and I’ve loved talking and getting to know her during our sessions.” To conclude, Georgia says “I would encourage everyone to volunteer and get involved here. I’d like to come back and help in the future after I return to uni in September.” Thank you for your support, Georgia. It's great to have you onboard with us! 😊
We are delighted to have a new wormery installed w We are delighted to have a new wormery installed within our Community Garden thanks to @projectabundanceuk. They came in last week to talk about the wormery to staff, volunteers and guests who also got the opportunity to handle some of our new earthy tenants! The wormery consists of an old bath tub secured within a wooden box and with a grated lid to prevent birds getting in. Over time, worms will produce 'Worm Tea' or liquid fertiliser which can be used for our plants and garden beds. Food waste such as fruit and vegetable peelings and cores as well as coffee grounds and loose tea will be added into the wormery on a regular basis. At Project Abundance, they work to educate, demonstrate and inspire ways to regenerate our environment, health and communities with a focus on natural food production and hands-on learning, encompassing the environmental, health & wellbeing, and social benefits of community green space projects. Through their consultancies, their educational market garden, outreach education and volunteering opportunities, they encourage environmental stewardship, support physical and mental wellbeing and facilitate community empowerment while providing fresh, naturally and locally grown food. Paddy (Services Manager) said "I'm really excited to have a wormery at the Garden House and it's been fascinating to find out how worms can create something that will be so useful for our Community Garden. I'm sure staff, volunteers and of course guests, will get involved. Thank you to Project Abundance for their support and donation.
